Have you ever wondered what the Bible says about your identity? Who am I in Christ?
Many Christians struggle to get a hold of what it means to be a Child of God and to really see ourselves the way He sees us. Beginning to walk with Christ can be a difficult transition when we have spent years only hearing who we are from the world or from ourselves.
We have to rewire our brain so that we can walk in our freedom and live loved, but that rewiring takes time and diligence in feeding your soul with God’s Word.
This is so important because if we don’t truly understand our identity in Christ, we will be swayed and discouraged by the lies of the enemy. We will be more prone to believe we aren’t good enough or strong enough or worthy of love.
So in this post, I’ve gathered 10 beautiful Scriptures about identity that will help you to understand exactly who you are in Christ Jesus.
1 Peter 1:18-19
“Knowing that you were ransomed from the futile ways inherited from your forefathers, not with perishable things such as silver or gold, but with the precious blood of Christ, like that of a lamb without blemish or spot. “
This verse shows us that we are redeemed; our souls have been bought and paid for by the precious blood of Jesus Christ. We have been purchased at the highest price.
I hope you see how adored and worthy of this God says that you are a friend. This verse shows us that God sent something so much more valuable than the most expensive, most highly valued item on this earth. This verse calls gold and silver “perishable” in comparison to the blood of Christ.
Your redemption is a free gift and it has paid your bill in full. Redemption is not something you have to work for or earn; you don’t have to be good enough for this gift. You simply need to receive it and believe it.
You are redeemed.
1 John 1:9
” If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness .”
There is such incredible promise in this verse. No matter what we’ve done, or what mistakes we’ve made, he is faithful to forgive us if we will confess our sins to Him. We do not have to be defined or bound by our past mistakes. If we will accept our redemption and confess our mistakes, we will be cleansed.
I don’t know about you, but I have made a lot of mistakes in my life. I spent many years believing that what I had done could never be forgiven and that I was not worthy of the love and forgiveness that Christ offered.
If that is you, friend, know that there is such freedom to be found in giving your sins, mistakes, and blunders over to Christ. You do not have to walk in shame and bondage and sin anymore friend. Christ offers such full, abundant life if we will accept the forgiveness He offers and confess our hearts to Him. He is faithful to forgive you.
You are forgiven.
2 Corinthians 5:17
“Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come. “
Once we have confessed our sins and asked Jesus to come into our hearts, we are redeemed. We are made new in Him. The old version of us has passed away and a new version of us is being remade.
When we are in Christ, the old things of our lives have been washed away: our old habits, our old sins, and our old mistakes. In Him, we have the power to work toward healing and overcoming temptations we used to yield to.
You are a new creation.
Jeremiah 31:3
“the Lord appeared to him from far away. I have loved you with an everlasting love; therefore I have continued my faithfulness to you.”
This verse is from a book of prophecy and like most Old Testament prophecies, the person is speaking to the nation of Israel. In Christ, we are now part of God’s chosen nation. God, in His goodness and omnipotence, knew that we would be reading these Scriptures in light of the salvation offered through Jesus and they are absolutely applicable to us.
This verse is very straight forward but it is so important for us to get a hold of: you are SO loved. God has loved you with an everlasting, unchanging, unfailing love.
No matter what you have done, He knows you and loves you so deeply. He is good and faithful and promises to rescue us. Just as Israel was in captivity for decades, we may be in a time of struggle for what feels like forever, but know God has not left you, nor is your pain without purpose.
You are loved.
1 Peter 2:9
“But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his own possession, that you may proclaim the excellencies of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light.“
I love this verse because it reminds me of exactly who God has called me to be in Christ. He has called us a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for His own possession. We are His. He has called us out of the darkness and if we are in Christ, we have responded to that call.
He has chosen us, but we are the ones that decide to step forward and live for Jesus.
There are billions and billions of people that have been created and He both knows us as a whole and individually; He has chosen you and me and your neighbor and the person who just cut you off in traffic to be part of His Kingdom. We then choose whether or not to accept His invitation. You are called out of darkness and into the marvelous light of His love friend.
You are chosen.
Psalm 17:7-8
“Wondrously show your steadfast love, O Savior of those who seek refuge from their adversaries at your right hand. Keep me as the apple of your eye; hide me in the shadow of your wings.”
This Psalm was written by King David when he was on the run for his life from Saul. As he wrote this, he desperately believed he would die if God didn’t intervene and save him. This verse is him pleading for the type of protection only God can offer, as a mama bird protects her young under her wings, so does God protect us. This is the cherishing kind of love He has for us.
We are the apple of His eye and precious in His sight. He welcomes us into the shadow of His wings.
You are cherished.
Ephesians 2:10
“For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.”
Those in Christ Jesus are created for a purpose, for we are His workmanship. We were created for 3 reasons:
- To be in relationship with God.
- To glorify God in the way we live.
- To spread the Gospel to others.
We were made to do the good works of this life. God set this ahead of us and Has given us all the tools we need to walk in them. So many Christians struggle to find their “calling” or their “purpose” but it really is so much simpler than we make it out to be. Love God and love people. Use your talents and interests to make a living and generously give to others.
So many of us are so scared to choose the wrong career or the wrong path because we might end up unhappy. But our happiness is not what we should seek. Seek first the Kingdom of God and He will provide for you. Our lives all have meaning, no matter what specific task we are called to.
You are purposed.
Isaiah 58:11
“And the Lord will guide you continually and satisfy your desire in scorched places and make your bones strong; and you shall be like a watered garden, like a spring of water, whose waters do not fail.”
Where God calls us to go, He will guide us. What God has called us to do, He will equip us for. This verse in the beautifully written book of Isaiah reminds us of God’s promise to satisfy our needs and keep us vibrant and growing, like a well-watered garden.
True satisfaction in this life comes from a relationship with Christ and following His will for our lives. We can take such comfort in knowing that we don’t have to do it alone. He is with us always, guiding us and making us strong.
You are guided & equipped.
Philippians 4:13
“I can do all things through him who strengthens me.”
This verse was written by Paul while he was imprisoned for spreading the Gospel. Often, this verse is taken to mean we can do anything because Christ gives us strength and this is only partially true. Paul wrote this part of his letter to encourage the Philippians to endure suffering and persecution and to press on in spreading the Good News, even in the midst of great opposition.
We can do all things through Christ who strengthens us, but we must first seek to do all things within His will. It does not mean we can do whatever we want, but it does mean we will be strengthened to endure through Christ as He has called us.
You are strengthened and capable.
Galatians 4:7
“So you are no longer a slave, but a son, and if a son, then an heir through God.”
Once we give our lives to Christ and accept the free gift of redemption, we become a child of God. We are adopted into His Kingdom and become heirs to heaven.
We are no longer slaves to the sin that bound us and we can choose to walk in complete freedom. For some, this happens very quickly. For others, it takes a long time and a lot of work to fully heal from our pasts. No matter how long the healing takes, we have the power in Christ to break free from what used to hold us down. We are no longer slaves to sin, fear, depression, anxiety, temptation or feelings.
You can overcome because you are a child of God.
