10 Easy Ways to Get Closer to God as a Busy Woman

Are you feeling spiritually disconnected in the chaos of your life? Do you want to grow closer to God, but aren’t sure how? You are not alone.
As a busy mom of littles, a pastor’s wife, and a military spouse, I’ve learned that staying close to God in full seasons doesn’t happen by accident—it takes intention and a little creativity.
Rarely do the things that matter most just fall into place. We have to fight to prioritize them.
The truth is, if we’re not actively seeking to grow closer to God each day, life will slowly pull us away.
This post will walk you through 10 simple ways to deepen your relationship with Jesus, even when your days feel maxed out. Whether you’re working, raising kids, navigating friendships, or just trying to keep up—these are practices you can return to again and again.
Let’s dive in.

1. Set The Tone for Your Day
How you begin your day matters.
Do you reach for your phone first? Wake to an alarm and immediately rush into the day?
If so, you’re not alone. This is a daily struggle for me, too—especially with little ones who don’t sleep. I’m not suggesting you wake up an hour earlier (unless that works for you!), but even five intentional minutes can make a world of difference.
A quiet moment before the day begins can help you feel grounded and connected to God before the chaos kicks in.

2. Prioritize Scripture, However You Can
If you want to grow closer to God, start with His Word.
John 1:1 says, “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.” When we engage with God’s Word we are connecting with the Creator himself.
One of the main purposes of the Bible is to teach is about who God is.
So if you want to feel closer to God but you aren’t regularly reading and studying the Bible, prioritize getting into the Word daily. You can read some tips I have for getting into the Bible every day here.
You do not need to do hours of deep Bible study every day to get something out of reading your Bible. Even if you’re not sure you understand it, just start reading it and stay consistent.
Don’t give up.

3. Listen to Christ-Centered Music
One thing that truly changes the tone of my day and my home is listening to music that centers on worshipping Jesus. Not just “Christian music, but songs that stir my soul to the goodness and faithfulness of Christ.
At the beginning of each year, our church takes the first month and seeks the Lord through prayer and fasting. Our pastor calls people to diligently cut media consumption along with a food fast. Only Christian media, no social media, and no secular music.
Without fail, the biggest impact on my spirit comes from deleting social media and switching to only worship music. I never realized how much secular media and music weigh on my soul until I stepped away from it.
Music is powerful, and whether we realize it or not, the lyrics of what we listen to get into our minds and our spirits.
This principle is why songs are so effective in teaching and memorizing for children. This is why you can recall lyrics to songs from middle school you forgot even existed.
When I’m overwhelmed with noise or overstimulation (hello, mom life), turning on worship music helps me reset. If your kids are old enough, try worship songs made just for them—complete with motions!
Pop an earbud in and listen while you work, do chores, or take a walk. Put on Christ-centered music in the car while you drive. Surround yourself with worship and see how your mood and heart change.

4. Be Selective About Your Media Consumption
This can be social media, television shows, movies, books, podcasts, or radio stations. Anything that you are consuming is getting into your heart and your mind.
Choosing not to engage with what is currently popular in media is a countercultural commitment. But, as followers of Jesus, we are to be set apart. Our lives should look different from those around us.
Colossians 3:2-3 says to “set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth. For you have died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God.”
If we are reading smutty books, listening to unedifying music, watching crass television and movies, and barely reading our Bibles, OF COURSE we are going to feel distant from God. You cannot expect to feed your soul junk and still feel spiritually healthy.
What you consume transforms your mind. If you feel disconnected from God, maybe you need to pray about what He wants you to prune out of your life.

5. Seek the Lord in Constant Prayer
Many overcomplicate prayer and believe it needs to be in dedicated, long, formal sessions. But prayer is nothing more than being connected with God by knowing Him and seeking His presence.
That can be done at any time, for any length of time. Sometimes my most connected prayers are in the moment, short prayers.
Prayer is often uncomfortable for new and seasoned believers alike. In his book, Prayer: Experiencing Awe and Intimacy with God, Tim Keller describes prayer as “both conversation and encounter between believers and God.”
We cannot begin to get closer to God without 1) knowledge of who God is through reading His Word and 2) encountering Him through prayer.
If you are like me, you may get overwhelmed with everything there is to pray for and all the needs in the world, but something is always better than nothing.
Your prayers do not need to be long or eloquent to be effective and give you the connection to the Lord that you crave.

6. Community
If you are not connected to a local church home, this is your sign that you need to be.
So many Christians I know say they are lonely, but then remain isolated by not connecting to a local church body.
And if you’ve experienced church hurt, I see you. Your pain is valid. Take time to heal, but don’t let that pain isolate you from the body of Christ. Healing often happens in community.
While keeping your distance may seem like you are protecting yourself, you are actually robbing yourself of the blessing of a church community.
No church will be perfect. You will likely find something to complain about if you are looking for that, anywhere you go.
But the cost of community is often risking being hurt and inconvenienced by others. But it is far worse to remain lonely and isolated.

7. Serve Others in Small and Faithful Ways
One of the quickest ways to feel near to the heart of God is to love the people around you like He does. You don’t have to fly across the world on a mission trip or lead a ministry to live on mission.
Simple, faithful service—especially when no one else sees it—draws you closer to Jesus, because this is the way of Jesus.
When we give our time and energy away for the sake of someone else, we are walking in obedience to the call of Jesus. And in doing so, we often find ourselves face-to-face with His presence.
Matthew 25:40 reminds us: “Whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.”
Nothing makes you feel closer to God like being the hands and feet of Jesus.

8. Get Into Nature and Be Still
There’s something about being outside—away from screens and the noise of life—that helps me breathe deeper and remember who God is.
My husband and love hiking. Though it is tougher now with little ones, we make it a priority to get into nature whenever we can. And we always find ourselves more connected to the Lord and each other when we do.
The heavens truly do declare the glory of God (Psalm 19:1), and sometimes what your soul really needs isn’t more noise, but quiet awe.
Jesus Himself often withdrew to quiet places to pray. If even He needed that kind of stillness, how much more do we?

9. Start a Simple Journaling Habit
Journaling doesn’t need to be fancy or time-consuming. It’s simply a space to process your thoughts with the Lord. Journaling helps me to focus and get my head around all the thoughts and feelings that get tangled throughout the day.
Sometimes when I can’t pray out loud or find the right words, writing my prayers helps me find the words my heart wanted to say, but my mind couldn’t process. It also creates a record of God’s faithfulness I can look back on later.
You don’t need a perfect system—just a pen, a notebook, and a willingness to be real with God.

10. Practice Daily Gratitude
This might sound small, but I promise it is powerful.
Don’t just take my word for it though, look to God’s promises in Scripture.
Phillipians 4:6-7 reminds us that if we will choose to give our worries and fears to the Lord and come to Him with thankful hearts, the peace of the Lord will guard our hearts and minds.
When we take time to name the goodness of God in our everyday lives—no matter how chaotic or mundane it feels—we reorient our hearts and our minds on the Lord and His goodness.
Gratitude changes our perspective. It softens our hearts. It lifts our eyes. It reminds us of all the blessings we have already experienced.
When we are intentional about thanking God regularly, we tune our hearts to His presence in both the beautiful and the ordinary.

Friend, I know life is full. I know your hands and your days are busy. But your soul is worthy of care—and your relationship with the Lord is worth prioritizing.
You don’t need to do all 10 of these things today. Start with just one. Pick the one that stood out the most to you and begin there. Grace upon grace, always.
God isn’t asking for perfection—He’s inviting you closer. And He promises that when you draw near to Him, He will draw near to you (James 4:8).
