How to Study Any Book of the Bible: A Simple Step-by-Step Method
How to Study Any Book of the Bible
Are you new to studying the Bible and unsure where to start? Or do you simply want to grow in your knowledge of God and His Word? Then you are in the right place.
There are a variety of ways to study Scripture, but one of the best ways to grow in your understanding of Scripture is to study an entire book of the Bible from beginning to end.
Instead of reading isolated verses or jumping between different passages, a book study allows you to see the author’s main message, understand the historical context, and discover how each chapter fits into the larger story God is telling.
It can feel intimidating at first, especially if you’ve never studied the Bible this way before. But studying a book of the Bible doesn’t have to be complicated.
With a simple plan and the right tools, anyone can learn to study God’s Word with confidence.
In this guide, I’ll walk you through the four simple steps I use whenever I begin studying a new book of the Bible. Whether you’re brand new to Bible study or looking for a more intentional way to read Scripture, this method will help you understand God’s Word more deeply and apply it to your everyday life.

Step 1: Prepare
Choose a Book to Study
To do a book study, you first have to choose a book! There are a variety of ways to choose a book of the Bible.
You can read straight through the Bible from Genesis to Revelation, choose a book based on a theme you’d like to study, or learn more about a particular biblical character. You might also choose to read through the New Testament before moving to the Old Testament.
You might also choose based on length. Many of the New Testament letters are very short, allowing you to practice this method and get a feel for it without spending months on one book.
If you are brand new to the faith or just new to studying the Bible, my personal recommendation is to begin with the Gospels. This gives you a solid understanding of Jesus, His ministry, and the Christian faith we practice today.
Gather Background Information for Your Book
I will cover the basic steps here, but if you would like to learn more about this step, see my in-depth blog post, “How to Study the Bible for Beginners.“
Before you dive into your chosen book, take a minute to learn as much about that book as you can.
To orient yourself to what you will be reading, answer the following questions:
- Who wrote it?
- To whom was it written?
- When was it written?
- What type of book is it? (Ex. Historical narrative? Poetry? Gospel? Epistle? Law?)
- What are the central themes?
Most study Bibles include this information in the introduction to each book of the Bible. If you’re studying through an entire book, you’ll only need to gather this information once and can refer back to it throughout your study.
Once you’ve gathered the background information, you’re ready to begin reading and studying your book one chapter at a time.
Step 2: Read
Read each chapter all the way through.
Before you begin taking notes, read the entire chapter from beginning to end. Reading the chapter as a whole helps you understand the author’s flow of thought before slowing down to examine the details.
Once you’ve finished reading, go back to the beginning and begin studying the chapter carefully.
You can study more than one chapter in a day, of course, or you can move more slowly if you want to do some verse mapping or word studies as you go.
Step 3: Study
Study through each chapter
Next, you’ll use your chosen Bible study method to work through each chapter until you are finished with the book. Some books of the Bible have 4 chapters, and others have 50, so your book size will determine how long this takes.
I recommend using the Inductive Bible Study Method, a simple three-step process that helps you understand Scripture before jumping to application. If you’d like a deeper explanation of this method, read my guide on How to Do Inductive Bible Study.
-Observe
Ask, “What does this passage say?” Record your observations, look for repeated words or themes, and note any questions you have as you read.
-Interpret
Next, ask, “What does this passage mean?” As you study through each chapter, take time at the end to write an outline or summary of each chapter.
Summarize the chapter’s main message, identify key verses, and consider the promises, commands, and truths God is communicating.
Summarizing each chapter is one of the best ways to make sure you’ve truly understood what you’ve read before moving on.
-Apply
Finally, ask, “How should this change the way I live?” Reflect on what the chapter teaches about God’s character, consider how it applies to your life today, and end your study in prayer.
Step 4: Reflect
Reflect on your book
One of the biggest mistakes we can make is closing our Bibles the moment we finish the final chapter. Reflection helps us connect the individual chapters into one unified message and consider how God has been working through the entire book.
As you finish your book study, take some time to look back through your study notes and chapter summaries and reflect on what you learned. Think through these questions as you review your notes:
- What repeated themes did you see?
- What did you learn about God?
- What encouraged you?
- What convicted you?
Write a paragraph or two summarizing the book in your own words, noting the connections you’ve made, the themes you’ve noticed, and the personal lessons you’re taking away from your study.
End in prayer
Take a few moments to thank God for what He has taught you through His Word. Ask Him to continue shaping your heart and helping you faithfully apply what you’ve learned.
